Katherine was on the judging panel for the 2005 Solar Decathlon in Washington, D.C., where 18 teams of college and university students constructed a "solar village" on the National Mall. Each team designed and built a home powered exclusively by the sun and transported the home to the event. The teams competed in 10 contests that ranged from architecture, livability and comfort to how well the solar homes performed in providing energy for space heating and cooling, hot water, lights and appliances. Each solar house also had to power an electric car.
The U.S. Department of Energy's Office of Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy was the primary sponsor and DOE's National Renewable Energy Laboratory was the event organizer. The American Institute of Architects, the National Association of Homebuilders, BP, and the DIY Network were private-sector sponsors.
